Bangkok’s temples and markets tell stories of the city’s past. At the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC), you can explore what its artists are saying today. This public arts centre brings exhibitions, creative shops, performances and learning spaces together in the heart of Bangkok. Its changing programme makes it worth checking what is on before you go. Bangkok Art and Culture Centre
A brief history
BACC grew out of years of advocacy by artists and cultural supporters who wanted Bangkok to have a public space for contemporary art. The centre opened to visitors on 29 July 2008 and held its official opening on 19 August 2009. Today, it supports exhibitions and programmes that connect local and international arts and culture with the public. Bangkok Art and Culture Centre
Where is it?
BACC stands at 939 Rama I Road, Wang Mai, Pathum Wan, Bangkok 10330, at Pathumwan Intersection, opposite MBK Center and Siam Discovery. Its central location makes it easy to combine an art visit with time in the Siam shopping area. Bangkok Art and Culture Centre
How to get there
From within Bangkok: The simplest option for many visitors is the BTS Skytrain to National Stadium station. A walkway connects the station to BACC’s third-floor entrance. You can also arrive by bus, taxi or ride-hailing car. If travelling by the Saen Saep canal boat, the centre lists Saphan Hua Chang pier as a nearby stop, approximately 300 metres away. From overseas: Fly into Bangkok through Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) or Don Mueang Airport (DMK), then travel to your hotel or into the city. Once you are on the BTS network, make your way to National Stadium station. There is no direct international service to the arts centre itself; your final journey is by local transport.
Opening hours and entry fees
BACC is generally open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m. It is closed on Mondays, New Year and Songkran holidays. Check its current programme before visiting, particularly if you are travelling for a particular exhibition or event. Bangkok Art and Culture Centre
Admission to exhibitions is free, except for special events. Concerts and plays may have separate charges that vary by event. You may also wish to budget for transport, refreshments or purchases from the shops. Bangkok Art and Culture Centre
What to see and how to plan your visit
Begin with the exhibition spaces on the lower floors, then head to the main galleries on floors seven to nine. The building also has smaller gallery areas, creative shops, an auditorium and an art library that is free to use. Because the displays change, allow time to follow whichever exhibition catches your interest instead of expecting a fixed collection on every visit. Bangkok Art and Culture Centre
A relaxed visit can take a couple of hours; allow longer if you plan to attend a talk or performance. Families may appreciate the library’s children’s corner. The centre lists lifts to every floor, accessible toilets and a wheelchair available on request. Bangkok Art and Culture Centre
Dos and don’ts
Do:
- Check exhibition notices before taking photographs. Personal photography is generally allowed in the main galleries unless a work is marked otherwise.
- Give other visitors space to look and keep conversations quiet in exhibition areas.
- Use the fifth-floor lockers for backpacks, umbrellas and bags larger than 40 × 30 × 20 cm before entering the main galleries.
- Ask staff about a work, event or access need if you are unsure.
- Respect the privacy of visitors, children and staff when taking pictures. Bangkok Art and Culture Centre
Don’t:
- Touch the artworks or bring food and drinks into the galleries.
- Use flash, a tripod or a selfie stick in the exhibition areas.
- Assume video recording or commercial photography is permitted; seek authorisation in advance where required.
- Plan your visit for a Monday without checking the schedule. Bangkok Art and Culture Centre
BACC offers a welcome chance to slow down in one of Bangkok’s busiest districts. Whether you spend an hour with an exhibition or build an afternoon around art, books and a performance, you will leave with another perspective on the city.
