Bangkok has many places to shop, but Chatuchak Weekend Market is an experience in its own right. Known locally as JJ Market, it is a maze of stalls selling clothing, handmade goods, home décor, art, antiques, plants and food. Come with a short shopping list if you like, but leave room for the unexpected find. 〖公式〗タイ国政府観光庁
A brief history
Chatuchak’s roots lie in Bangkok’s earlier weekend market at Sanam Luang. As that market grew and the area became congested, it moved to its present Chatuchak location in 1982. Over time, it became one of Thailand’s best-known shopping destinations, drawing residents and visitors alike. 〖公式〗タイ国政府観光庁
Where is it?
The market is in Chatuchak district, northern Bangkok, along Kamphaeng Phet Road. It is near Chatuchak Park, though the park and the market have different opening hours. 〖公式〗タイ国政府観光庁
Getting there
From elsewhere in Bangkok: Take the MRT Blue Line to Kamphaeng Phet for convenient access to the market. Chatuchak Park MRT and Mo Chit BTS are also nearby; allow a short walk from either station. A taxi or ride-hailing car can work well if you have luggage or several shopping bags, but rail is often simpler when roads are busy. 〖公式〗タイ国政府観光庁
From overseas: Fly into one of Bangkok’s international airports, Suvarnabhumi (BKK) or Don Mueang (DMK). From your airport or hotel, continue into the city and connect to the MRT or BTS for the final part of the journey. Check which airport is printed on your ticket before arranging a transfer.
Opening hours and admission
The full weekend market generally operates Saturday and Sunday, 09:00–18:00. There is limited trading at other times: the plant section is listed for Thursday and Friday, 07:00–18:00, and some retail shops for Friday, 18:00–24:00. Individual stalls may open or close at different times, so choose Saturday or Sunday if you want the widest selection. Hours can change around special events or holidays. 〖公式〗タイ国政府観光庁

How to enjoy your visit
Set aside at least half a day if you enjoy browsing. Arriving in the morning gives you time to explore before the hottest part of the day. Wear comfortable shoes, carry drinking water and take breaks. The market is large enough that a photograph of a stall’s section number or nearby landmark can help you find your way back to something you liked. chatuchakmarket.org
Browse beyond the first row of stalls. You might spend one hour looking for gifts, another discovering local design, and the next sampling a snack. If you find something you truly want, ask the price, inspect it carefully and decide whether you would be happy carrying it for the rest of your visit.
Dos and don’ts
Do:
- Bring some Thai baht in smaller notes; payment options vary between stalls.
- Ask politely before photographing a vendor or their merchandise.
- Compare prices and negotiate courteously where appropriate.
- Keep your phone, wallet and shopping bags close in crowded aisles.
- Check sizes, materials and the condition of an item before paying.
Don’t:
- Assume every stall is open just because the market grounds are accessible.
- Pressure a seller or argue aggressively over a price.
- Buy wildlife products or items you cannot legally take home; check your destination’s customs rules before buying antiques or animal-derived goods.
- Leave your visit until late Sunday if seeing the broadest range of stalls matters to you.
Chatuchak rewards curiosity. Give yourself time to wander, pause for food and enjoy the atmosphere as much as the shopping.
